Why do manufacturers always say that a battery is “maintenance free?” We hate that. Your battery absolutely needs maintenance, so just don’t believe them when they tell you that. Just a few simple steps will take care of any problems:
• Keep your battery clean! A dirty case can actually cause current to drain. You can wipe it with a damp rag and use a little mild detergent if you want.
• Clean the battery posts or terminals! Loosen and remove the negative (black) cable first, then the positive (red) cable next. Make a paste from a few tablespoons of baking soda and a little water, and use a brass battery brush (or a toothbrush; pick someone you don’t like and use theirs) and shine it up!
• Inspect the battery case for any damage! Look for things like a crack or a bulge. Actually – you should probably do that before you do any cleaning, because a crack or a bulge is a sign that you want a new battery, so you can save yourself some time there. Move this to step one.
• Reinstall the cables! Positive (red) first, negative (black) second, and then coat the terminals and clamps with a thin coating of grease to prevent corrosion.
