Some Tips to Extend the Life of Your Car!

Tires are the “feet” of your car, and you know how you feel when your feet hurt! So pay attention to your car’s “dogs” because – whether it’s hot and humid or cold and icy – there just isn’t any good time to change a tire by the side of the road!
• Keep your tire caps on, because if you’ve got a leaky valve, you’re going to wake up with a flat tire. (and btw – if you replace your tires, make sure the tire shop knows that you want new valves with those new tires!)
• Want to make a tire salesman your best friend forever? Under-inflate your tires! Running on under-inflated tires will cost you because you’re going to have to replace them a whole lot sooner than you would if you maintain your tires at the proper inflation.
• Check your tires for uneven wear, and if it’s there, then you’re either ignoring what we told you to do above, or you need a wheel realignment, which we talk about below. It can also mean that you’re doing a lot of other things wrong, but this is enough for this bullet point.
• Check your wheel alignment every 30,000 miles, or whenever that pesky owner’s manual we keep telling you about tells you to, and have it realigned.
• Rotate your tires every 6,000 to 7,500 miles, it’ll help your tires wear evenly, and that’ll help you get the maximum road life out of them.
• Check the tread. Now, we know – we do go on about the tread in your tires a whole lot in this blog, it’s one of our favorite topics in fact. And that’s a good thing, because we have to keep repeating ourselves. One more time, get yourself 26¢ – a quarter and a penny – and do this: if you want to drive in rain, stick the quarter between the treads in several places, and if part of Washington’s head is always covered, you’re good to go. Stick the penny between the treads in several places, and if the top of the Lincoln Memorial is always covered, you’re good to go in the snow.
